newsletter MOCK UP- evaluation

This is the mock up of the newsletter that i will create for my preliminary task, i have done this using Microsoft word publisher. To plan my layout i have used a 5x5 grid, this has allowed me to structure my layout. I have gone for a more simplistic style of front cover as i feel that this makes it look more professional. i have done this as my chosen target audience is the parents of the pupils.

I have chosen to use a large image in the background, this image will be of a sixth form student studying in the library for example. i have decided on only using a small piece of text on the front cover as it makes the newsletter look more appealing and less daunting. I have gone with the tag line of 'care, courtesy and common sense' i have chosen this as it fits with the morals of the school and my ideology of how the school is a caring and supporting place. The cover line for my front cover will be involving a school event such as a trip that has taken place. For my title i have not completely decided on a final idea, i have come up with some. Such as 'ToDeyes News' i have thought about this one as it plays a pun on the schools name and makes it more humorous. I have also considered 'Deyes News', this is a more formal idea and i would say that this may relate to my target audience more. I will stick with the colours of the school (red, white, blue), however i will make them less prominent with the use of photoshop, i may make them look washed out.
This is my contents page mock up I have decided to use many photos on my contents page so that it gives an incite in to the magazine and draws people in. i have decided to use a suttle background that is not very prominent on the page this is so the eye is drawn towards the main image. i will use a font from Dafont for my title as they are better and more original than normal fonts from word etc.

Music magazine mock ups

Semiotics

Semiotics is the study of signs, this is when something van represent something else. For instance the colour red is a colour however it can also have other interpretations such as it may give the feeling of anger or the resemblance of blood.

Ferdinand de Saussure
His dyadic system suggests that signs are just psychological rather than they actually exist.

Charles sander pierce
His tryadic semiotic system suggests that a sign is either one of three
Index: this meaning the sign does not have an arbitrary signifier(such as smoke may suggest fire but does not mean that there is a fire)
Icon: this is when the sign resembles the signified but is not real (such as a picture of a tree may indicate a tree but is in fact not a tree)
Symbol: this is when the sign is conventional (such as letters or numbers)

While creating my magazine I will have to take semiotics into account so that my magazine gives across the correct message and that even the smallest symbol or letter relates to my chosen genre.

St James catholic high school newsletter

St.James catholic high school

From analysing the St James' school news letter i have found aspects that are good and bad. Firstly the newsletter does show some good aspects such as the layout of the letter, the newsletter is split up with the use of coloured text boxes. These are a good way to layout a page as it clearly shows separate stories in the newsletter. they are also good as they split up the text so it seems nicer to read as it is not one big block of text. the newsletter is also good as it involves visual aid to keep people interested as it breaks up the text and makes it look less daunting. The same text is also used all the way through, this makes it look more professional. The main title headings also stay in the same font as they are bold and slightly larger, this makes them stand out so you can clearly see what the section is talking about.

However images from this newsletter are not taken with a professional camera, this makes the newsletter look less formal and unprofessional. I can tell they are not taken with a professional camera as they clearly show the class with people looking very white in the photograph. Also the main title is not very colourful  or bright, this makes it look boring and uninteresting.

However the newsletter is successful in the fact that it successfully targets its target audience, this is through the formality of its layout with it being more formal, with the use of fonts and language used. It also gives information that is relevant to the parent as they need to know events etc that are happening in the school.

Magazine Covers research

from this magazine cover i have noticed that most music magazines have a main central image that acts as the focus point. this therefore showing that this is the main part of a magazines front cover.
from this magazine i have noticed that the side text or sub stories is usually in quite small font, i think this is done so attention is drawn towards the main image.
from this magazine i have noticed that even though the picture covers part of the title you still know what the name of the magazine is. this shows me that when creating the magazine the mast head and title need to be able to leave a lasting impact. also the mast head has to be large so that it is easily noticeable.

Ideology - preliminary task

Ideology is the different aspects of the magazine that are set to promote a specific message, they are the ideas behind a media text. when creating my newsletter i will have to consider the ideology behind the pictures that i include, tthe text within the newsletter, the fonts used etc. I will have to take these into consideration so that they successfully target my intended audience.

One of my first ideologies that i intend to promote is how modern deyes high is, i will do this with the use of photographs. these photographs may include things such as the new Deyes building and the facilities within, such as the brand new computer suites. the images may also include students using these facilities. i ma yalso use pictures of the new ipads or apple macs that are used in the scholl by students. Text wise i may talk about the use of email to distribute newsletters or school events, this shows modernisation in the school and how it is effecting parebts outside of school.

Secondly is to promote how successful the school is, i will do this with the use of images. These images may include pictures of Exam results which show the successes achieved by the students. i may slao show pictures of successes in other areas of the school such as sport competitions. This may also link into another ideology, this being to show how active and athletic deyes high is, this may be through images that show a pupil taking part in a sports activity.

Another ideology that i have considered is to promote the quality of teaching in the school. this gets across the image that the school has experienced and passionate terachers who can interact and engage with the pupils. To get across this idea i may use images of teachers presenting a powerpoint to a class of alert and interested students. I may also use pictures thatr show pupils and teachers talking happily either in classrooms or around the school. this will promote the idea of a happy pupil teacher relationship, this shows that the teacher is good and that they are respected by pupils.

Another ideology is to promote the policy of healthy eating, this can be done with the use of pictures. My ideas for these pictures are to get images of the healthy eating logo in the cantine and the food served at lunch.

The main audience for my newsletter is the parents of the pupils, to successfully target this audience i will focus on the more positive side of events. and look at the successes from the school.

Analysis of school newsletter

Deyes High Newsletter Analysis

For the preliminary task for my preliminary task before i complete my Music Magazine i am going top create a school news letter. To do this i have looked at exsiting newsletters to see what they do well and not so well. When looking at the Deyes high 'Deyes of our lives' newsletter im am not very impressed. this is mainly due to the layout, colours and overall appearance. firstly when looking at the coloours used they do not look very aesthetically pleasing. I say this as on the front cover they have used a blue text box with a red outline, these are two very prominant colours and when put together are more of a strain on your eyes as they are very bold and do not work well. The colours are also very bright and make other aspects of the page look inferior to the main heading. the main heading is in yellow this does not go well with the blue and red as they clash.

the newsletter is also very text based, the news letter is filled with large chunks of text. i do not see this as very good as it means that whole pages go with no visual aid, i see this as a bad design as it looks very boring and uninteresting and with this image people are most likely to lose interset and not read the entire section. The whole newsletter is text based i would recomend that more pictures should be put in
to relate to the topic such as if a sports paragraph is being spoken about it should be a picture of say a person scoring goal. The font on the main page and throughout the newsletter is calibri in size 14, this is big enough to read, however this is not the best as it is quite formal and would not appeal to the younger pupils in the school.
however tyhe information is pragmatic as it is relevant to all pupils teachers and parents so it can be understood by the whole audience. I also like how at the end they have a puzzle that people can try to complete, this is a good way of making ther newsletter seem fun.
Finally i have come to the conclusion that the main audience for this newsletter i the parents of the pupils, ibelieve this as fromn experience pupils are not realy ionterested in school news wheras parents are more concerned with the goings on in school as they want to be informed.

Questionnaire

The purpose of my questionnaire is to find out how many people buy music magazines and how many do not. It may also help me to decide the target audience for my magazine as i can see what age group leans towards my chosen genre. to produce my questionnaire i used google docs, this was very helpful as it allowed me to lay out my questionnaire effectively with the use of page break, with these results i will evaluate which age group is attracted to certain magazines. this method was very useful as it allowed me to lay my questionnaire well as meant that i could follow two routes depending on the answers that people put.
